Frequently Asked Questions — Paycheck Calculator
How is federal income tax calculated from my paycheck?
Federal income tax uses progressive brackets — different portions of your income taxed at different rates. In 2024 for single filers: 10% on the first $11,600, 12% up to $47,150, 22% up to $100,525, and higher brackets above that. Only the income within each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate.
What are FICA taxes?
FICA (Federal Insurance Contributions Act) taxes fund Social Security and Medicare. Employees pay 6.2% of wages toward Social Security (on wages up to $168,600 in 2024) and 1.45% for Medicare (no cap). High earners pay an additional 0.9% Medicare surtax on wages above $200,000.
How does a 401(k) contribution reduce my taxes?
Traditional 401(k) contributions are made pre-tax, reducing your taxable income. If you contribute $500/month ($6,000/year) and are in the 22% bracket, you save $1,320 in federal taxes annually. The money grows tax-deferred until withdrawal in retirement.
