Frequently Asked Questions — Average Calculator
What is the difference between mean, median, and mode?
Mean is the arithmetic average (sum divided by count). Median is the middle value when sorted — it is resistant to outliers. Mode is the most frequently occurring value. For the set {1, 2, 2, 3, 10}: mean = 3.6, median = 2, mode = 2.
When should I use median instead of mean?
Use the median when your data has outliers or is skewed. For example, average income in a region is better represented by median because a few very high earners can pull the mean far above what most people earn. Median represents the "middle" person.
What is standard deviation?
Standard deviation measures how spread out the values are from the mean. A low standard deviation means values cluster near the mean; a high value means they are spread out. Formula: σ = √(variance), where variance = average of squared differences from the mean.
