Frequently Asked Questions — Pythagorean Theorem Calculator
What is the Pythagorean theorem?
The Pythagorean theorem states that in a right triangle, the square of the hypotenuse (c) equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides (legs a and b): a² + b² = c². It only applies to right triangles — triangles with one 90° angle.
What is a Pythagorean triple?
A Pythagorean triple is a set of three positive whole numbers (a, b, c) that satisfy a² + b² = c². Common examples: 3-4-5, 5-12-13, 8-15-17, 7-24-25. Multiples also work: 6-8-10 is a 3-4-5 triple scaled by 2.
Can I find a leg if I know the hypotenuse and the other leg?
Yes. Rearrange the formula: a = √(c² − b²) or b = √(c² − a²). The hypotenuse must be longer than either leg for the triangle to be valid. Select "Find A" or "Find B" in the calculator to use these formulas.
