What is a roofing square?
A roofing square equals 100 square feet of roof surface. Shingles are sold by the bundle, with 3 bundles covering 1 square for standard 3-tab shingles.
How does roof pitch affect material quantity?
Steeper pitch means more actual surface area. A 4/12 pitch adds ~5% more area; a 12/12 pitch adds ~41%. This calculator applies the pitch factor automatically.
How much waste should I add?
Add 10–15% for simple gable roofs, 15–20% for complex roofs with hips and valleys, up to 25% for steep pitches.
