IRC requires 4–7¾". Comfortable residential riser is 7". Rule: Riser + Tread = 17–18" for comfort.
How do I calculate stair steps?
Total rise ÷ desired riser height → round to nearest whole number → that is your step count. Divide total rise by count for exact riser height.
How long is a stringer?
√(Total Rise² + Total Run²). Add 6–12" for top and bottom cuts.
