Frequently Asked QuestionsSlope Calculator

How do you calculate slope?
Slope m = (y₂−y₁) / (x₂−x₁) = rise/run. It measures how steep a line is and in which direction. A positive slope rises left to right; negative falls; zero is horizontal; undefined is vertical.
What is slope-intercept form?
Slope-intercept form is y = mx + b, where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis). Given two points, find m first, then solve for b using b = y₁ − m·x₁. This form makes it easy to graph a line and identify key properties.
What does a perpendicular slope mean?
Two lines are perpendicular if their slopes multiply to −1: m₁ × m₂ = −1, so m₂ = −1/m₁. A line with slope 2 has a perpendicular slope of −1/2. Horizontal lines (slope 0) are perpendicular to vertical lines (undefined slope).
