Frequently Asked Questions — BMI Calculator
What is BMI and how is it calculated?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is calculated by dividing your weight in kilograms by your height in meters squared. The formula is BMI = weight(kg) / height(m)². For imperial units, the formula is BMI = (weight in pounds × 703) / (height in inches)². It is a screening tool, not a diagnostic measure.
What are the BMI categories?
The World Health Organization defines four main categories: Underweight is below 18.5, Normal weight is 18.5 to 24.9, Overweight is 25.0 to 29.9, and Obese is 30.0 and above. These ranges apply to adults. Children and teens use age-specific percentile charts.
Is BMI an accurate measure of health?
BMI is a useful screening tool but has limitations. It does not distinguish between muscle and fat mass, so athletes may have a high BMI despite being healthy. It also does not account for fat distribution, bone density, or overall fitness level. Consult a healthcare provider for comprehensive health assessment.
